CARSON, Calif. – Alejandro Santiago extended his current unbeaten streak in pursuit of another title shot.

The squat Tijuana native is now unbeaten in his last 20 starts following a 2nd round knockout of Dominican Republic’s Juan Gabriel Medina (12-7, 11KOs) in their bantamweight bout Saturday evening at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. Santiago floored Medina late in round two, with referee Rudy Barragan counted out the fallen Dominican at 2:59.

Santiago picks up his first win outside of Mexico in the process, with current run incredibly including four draws in U.S. and Puerto Rico. The 25-year-old bantamweight didn’t leave anything to chance on Saturday, forcing a brisk pace in the opening round as Medina quickly found himself outgunned. Santiago remained poised in his attack, inching closer in round two before finding an opening in order to close the show.

Medina found himself trapped in a corner, attempting to pick off the incoming. Santiago managed to punch his way through Medina’s guard, connecting upstairs to produce the bout’s lone knockdown. Medina was unable to make it to his feet in the fight being waved off just before the bell.

Santiago (24-2-5, 14KOs) picks up his eighth consecutive victory following back-to-back-draws. The latter of the two came in a 12-round split decision stalemate with Jerwin Ancajas in their Sept. 2018 IBF junior bantamweight title fight in Fresno, California. Santiago has since campaigned at bantamweight where he stopped six of his last eight opponents.

The bout served as the final non-televised preliminary of a four-fight undercard preceding the Showtime-televised tripleheader.
