The all-Mexican showdown between super bantamweights Abner Mares (24-0-1, 13KOs) and Victor "Viking" Terrazas (33-2-1, 19KOs) will have to wait. Mares is the WBC's full champion at 122, while Terrazas holds the WBC' silver belt.

There are ongoing discussions regarding Mares making the first defense of his new WBC belt on August 18th in either Guadalajara or Puerto Vallarta - but it won't be against Terrazas.

Edison Reynoso, managing director of Canelo Promotions, discussed the situation.

"We have nothing close to a Mares [fight]. We will make an optional defense [of the WBC silver title] and later we will be able to have something for the 'Viking', something important," Reynoso said. "Ultimately what matters is making competitive bouts. Right now the 'Viking' is paid well, a good challenger to any champion, and dangerous."

"Abner Mares just won the world title and Golden Boy has decided to give him a fight that's a little more quiet, you could say, before going to defend it [against Terrazas]. That way we can do that fight as the official challengers, and that suits us better."

Terrazas is expect to learn the name of his next opponent, and the venue, very soon.
