Several reports in Mexico are casting doubts on the announced rib injury to former three division world champion Abner Mares. Last week Mares disculosed that he injured his rib in sparring and withdrew from a scheduled rematch with WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez.

Last August at the StubHub Center in Carson, Gonzalez stopped Mares in the first round. It was one of the bigger upsets of the year. The rematch was set for February 15th at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. No new date has been announced.

At the time of the injury, Mares was training in Mexico at a facility owned by former champion Ana Maria Torres.

Several reports in Mexico are claiming that Mares allegedly never sparred at the gym - which is why some writers are casting doubts on the injury. Some reporters are speculating that Mares needed more time to prepare.
